The Aurum Institute, a public-benefit medical research organisation operating across multiple countries, found its existing provider's methodology and tool overly complex and South Africa-centric. We demonstrated Engage by grading a sample of roles side by side with their previous results, and the client adopted the methodology, with internal training and our validation of the first 15 roles.

Context

The Aurum Institute NPC is a public benefit, not-for-profit organisation focused on advancing global health through research, systems strengthening, and public health implementation. Headquartered in South Africa, Aurum operates in multiple countries and requires governance and people practices that are credible, consistent, and scalable across global roles.

Business challenge

The client had been using a job evaluation provider but found both the methodology and supporting tool overly complex and difficult to administer. The approach was also largely South Africa-centric and not well suited to evaluating roles across different country contexts. Aurum required a grading system that was simple to administer, methodologically robust, and applicable to both South African and global posts, without losing credibility or consistency.

Our approach

The client approached us for a demonstration of the Engage methodology and tool. To help them assess suitability, we worked through the grading of a number of positions together and enabled the client to compare those outcomes with the results they had previously obtained through their existing provider. This side-by-side comparison gave the client confidence that the methodology produced sound, credible outcomes across different role types and geographies, while being significantly simpler to administer and faster. Based on this experience, the client adopted the methodology and built internal capability to self-administer, with our training and validation of the first 15 roles.

Outcome

Aurum successfully transitioned to a simpler, globally applicable job evaluation methodology that retained credibility while improving usability and turnaround time. The organisation built strong internal capability to self-administer the process, supported by targeted external validation. Four years later, Aurum continues to use Engage annually, reflecting both the sustainability of the approach and the strength of the ongoing relationship.

In the client’s words

The simplicity of the Engage tool allows us to achieve clear grading outcomes quickly. This is particularly well suited to funder-related roles, where speed, consistency, and credibility are essential.
