Established in 2005, this container solutions provider took a deliberate, forward-looking decision to put the right people structures in place before growth exposed the gaps. We evaluated and graded 9 management roles using Engage, proof that rigorous grading delivers value at every scale, not just for large enterprises.

Context

Established in 2005, this South African business has grown into a well-regarded provider of custom-built container solutions, conversions, rentals, and self-storage. Behind the commercial growth is a founder with a methodical approach to building the business, one who recognised that a fast-growing business is precisely the environment in which getting people structures right early matters most.

Business challenge

The challenge was not born of crisis. There were no contested grades, no remuneration disputes, no governance requirement driving the engagement. The management team wanted to put exceptional structures in place proactively and ahead of the growth curve: an independent, credible evaluation of the 9 management roles, a grading framework reflecting genuine differences in complexity and accountability, and a defensible basis for remuneration decisions now and as the business grows.

Our approach

We applied the Engage methodology to evaluate and grade each of the 9 management roles. For each role we assessed the job descriptor in detail, applied the Engage framework against a consistent set of factors, considered internal relativities between roles, and produced a grading outcome positioned within a coherent overall framework. Because the scope was focused, the process could be conducted with a level of attention and precision that larger engagements do not always allow.

Outcome

The business now has a formal, independently validated grading structure for its management team, grounded in a recognised methodology and reflective of the genuine complexity of each role. The framework provides a clear, defensible basis for remuneration decisions, supports conversations about progression, and gives leadership the confidence that comes from knowing their people architecture is sound. It also demonstrates that rigorous job grading is not the preserve of large organisations.
