Job evaluation, rebuilt for modern organisations
What is Engage?
Engage Job Evaluation is a modern factor-based job evaluation methodology and tool designed to help organisations evaluate roles in a way that is practical, transparent, and defensible.
It was built to respond to the reality that many organisations no longer operate in stable, static environments. Roles evolve quickly. Structures shift. Accountability changes. Traditional job evaluation methods often struggle to keep pace.
Engage gives organisations a more modern way to evaluate roles by focusing on the content and design of the role, rather than relying too heavily on job descriptions or specialist interpretation. It allows organisations to create a clearer, more consistent view of role size and grading across the business.
Why organisations use Engage
Organisations use Engage when they need a job evaluation approach that is:
-
easier to explain to leaders and employees
-
more practical to apply across different role types
-
faster to implement than traditional approaches
-
easier to maintain as the organisation evolves
-
strong enough to support fair pay, governance, and benchmarking
Job evaluation should create a common language for role size, support analysis of role and pay relativities, enable comparison with the external market, and help define a logical structure for grades and career progression. Engage is designed to do exactly that.
Why traditional approaches often struggle
Many traditional job evaluation methods rely heavily on position descriptions and indirect information about the role.
That can create several problems:
-
first-hand role knowledge is excluded from evaluation
-
job descriptions can be misunderstood or biased
-
the process becomes slow and highly specialist-led
-
systems become difficult to maintain over time
-
the logic becomes harder for the organisation to follow openly and confidently
Engage was designed as a response to these challenges. It supports a more inclusive and transparent process by bringing knowledgeable people into the evaluation and reducing over-reliance on static documentation.
How Engage works
At its core, Engage evaluates each role across five decision grids. These five grids create a structured view of the size and complexity of the role:
-
Technical: Looks at the knowledge required by the role and how that knowledge is applied.
-
Managerial: Assesses managerial complexity, especially coordination and business decision-making.
-
Persuasive: Considers the role’s communication and influence requirements, including selling where relevant.
-
Control: Looks at organisational control, including staff reporting and site accountability.
-
Impact: Assesses the role’s level of responsibility and reporting context in the wider organisation.
For some flexible or person-related assignments, Influence can be used as an alternate grid to Impact.
What Engage considers when grading
Engage is built on one core principle: evaluate the role, not the person.
That means the methodology focuses on:
-
the content of the role
-
the level of knowledge required
-
the complexity of decisions
-
the scale of control and accountability
-
the influence and impact of the role in the organisation
It does not evaluate:
-
the current employee’s performance
-
personal attributes
-
future ambitions for the role
-
proficiency of the incumbent
This creates a more disciplined and objective basis for grading.
A practical and transparent process
Engage is designed to be used in an open, dialogue-based process involving knowledgeable people from the business.
Depending on the organisation, implementation can involve:
-
an executive session to align terms and definitions
-
briefing sessions to build awareness
-
evaluation sessions with a representative committee
-
sense-check sessions to compare roles and refine judgments
-
final approval and executive presentation
This process supports greater transparency, stronger internal buy-in, clearer governance, and better long-term sustainability.
From grids to grades
Once a role has been evaluated across the five grids, the combined output is processed by an algorithm to produce a grade.
The resulting grades can be aligned with internal grading structures, globally recognised systems, or other agreed grading systems.
This means Engage does not force organisations into a single grading language. It provides a modern evaluation logic that can still connect to the grading platform the organisation already uses or prefers.
What clients receive
A typical Engage project can provide:
-
a fully evaluated job grid
-
aligned grades across roles and job families
-
access to the Engage platform
-
trained facilitators or committee members
-
stronger internal capability to maintain the methodology
-
optional policy and implementation support
Additional support can also include job title alignment, implementation support, grade movement reports, and job evaluation policy development.
Why Engage matters
Job evaluation is not only about ranking jobs. Done well, it helps organisations create internal fairness, support external competitiveness, build more defensible reward structures, compare roles consistently, enable benchmarking, and strengthen pay governance.
